About the prostitute scene

I take it this is the scene with the car. I never could figure out what was supposed to be funny about a man having sex with a prostitute until she was exhausted, then starting up again. I found the scene to be rather horrific, and might just be me, it seemed like a cruel rape joke. Yes she's being paid, but I never understood why it was amusing that she was being tortured like that.

The reason I bring this up, is I was thinking about how prevalent rape humor can be in some circles these days, and wondering if this was an early form of that. Sure maybe it's that I watched when I was too young to get what sex was, it's kind of ironic my dad would watch some pretty risqué comedies with me when I was a kid, then got all overprotective about me watching certain things when I was older. It's not as weird as it sounds, most adult jokes just went completely over my head including this one at the time.

I just don't see what the purpose of this scene being in the film is. Maybe it's dark humor, or squick humor. Just was one of those things I still recall as being disturbing.

According to TV Tropes this was the purpose of the scene, Chief Benton has wild sex with a prostitute at night in his car while Earl Mott is filming both of them in an attempt to prove Sam Stone murdered his wife. So it's blackmail, okay I can see why that would be an important plot point. Still seemed as I said needlessly disturbing.

She wasn't being raped she was obviously over-acting and pretending to have the orgasm of her life when she clearly wasn't. That's why it's funny and because it's important to the plot because Carol's dumb bf was supposed to be filming Sam murdering Barbara but got the police chief having an affair instead and they unintentionally blackmailed the chief to get Sam arrested. I really didn't think that needed to be explained.

I'm with you, Haddonfield. Before they transact business, the Chief says he likes a woman who makes a lot of sound. Her response amounts to, OK, whatever, it's your money. So she is giving a performance for his benefit.

MORE!

Yes, the screaming was all in a day's work for the prostitute. As said above, the chief's main request was that she make a lot of noise, which she very obligingly did.

I agree that having sex with him could be seen as "torture", though! :)

reply

Torture? Aw, man, have pity on the poor guy. XD

I mean, really, how many times will you look under Jabba's manboobs?

The humor wasn't the sex going on in the car, it was Bill Pullman's reaction to what he thought was murder when it was only a hooker overacting for her John. I don't think it was even close to being a rape scene. You clearly misunderstood it, OP.

The Chief clearly says he likes women to make a lot of noise during sex because that turns him on and his wife just lays there "like a sack."

The prostitute says something like "Whatever, it's your money, honey."

Those are the extremely obvious clues that she's not being raped and just doing what her client wants which is screaming her head off.

One of the best parts of that whole scene was Earl telling Carol how it seemed like it "took forever," which was "a few minutes" Ha ha ha! Sorry, I don't remember the exact words he used.

It's spelled Raymond Luxury Yacht, but it's pronounced 'Throat-Warbler Mangrove'

"God, it took forever. It must have lasted... two minutes."
