Just a comment about clothes...

I hated Barbara's sweater at the end, it makes her look fat, and isn't it too hot for a sweater?. Also, why doesn't Sandy have something better on? Those shorts could have been taken in at the very least, a designer should never be seen in baggy clothes, especially since she has a figure.

It was the EIGHTIES , the time when people were not afraid of excess and experiements

The sweater complements the Memphis/Sottsass style of her furniture.

I think Sandy has to look ordinary because he and Ken are desperate financially. Plus, her "unflattering" look heightens the scene when Barbara discovers her designs and both of them put on the evening gowns.

I agree - Sandy and Ken werent very well off for clothes, and plus that was probably the fashion back then anyway.
I don't mind her clothes in the final scene because if we were admiring how beautiful her attire was, we might not notice her face light up with pure emotion when she sees her husband coming out of the sea :)
We just concentrate on how happy they are instead.

This movie is pretty much a showcase for the worst of eighties fashion. Love it!
