Maverick is referred to as Lieutenant Mitchell the entire film, but he clearly wears Captains bars when he’s in Class A. I can’t be the only one who noticed that.
shareYou may be thinking of a different branch of service. Captains bars in the Marines are for an O-3 Captain, but in the Navy, O-3 is Lieutenant and Captain is O-6.

Ensign - Gold bar
Lieutenant JG - Silver Bar
Lieutenant - Two Silver Bars
Lt Commander - Gold leaf
Commander -Silver leaf
Captain - Eagle
