The unseen BatB; episodes that never made season 2!

This is no fanfic, but it comes from the official The Unseen BatB book by Wdward Groos and it was handed to him by the series' creators.
Here are the stories that were supposed to be season 2 episodes. Hope I'm making some of you happy with this.

1. Mitch:
Sam denton becomes fatally ill; he appeals to Vincent to bring Mitch to him so that they can be reconciled. Vincent must convince Catherine and Father that Sam's last wish be honored. Mitch betrays Vincent by attempting to escape through the tunnels. Ultimately Mitch proves that Vincent's faith in him is justified when he surrenders and returns to prison.
[originally called The prodigal]

2. Isaac's High Noon:
In avenging his sister's death from drugs, Isaac incurs the wrath of the neighborhood drug lord who sends his forces to kill Isaac. No one in the neighborhood will come to Isaac's aid and Vincent must intervene.

3. The Return of Elliot Burch:
Still obsessed with Catherine, Elliot hires a private detective to discover the identity of Catherine's lover and learns of Vincent and his world below.

4. The Abyss:
A brutal heavy-metal street gang invades the tunnels, killing and terrorizing the tunnel people. Vincent's life becomes a pitched battle as he fights to protect his world. After rescuing Catherine from their grip, the siege culminates in a hand battle between Vincent and the vicious leader of the gang on a footbridge over the abyss.
[a variation of this story aired as The Outsiders. The final battle sounded to similar to the one between Vincent and Jason Walker from S1 ep Terrible Savior]

5. Toxic Waste:
Toxis wastes are being dumped into the tunnels. several children become ill and Catherine must find the culprits before the tunnelworld becomes inhabitable but without exposing its existence.

6. The Darkest Night:
Vincent tells the story of the darkest night of his life which lead him to Central park where he found Catherine as she lay dying.
[Why did this 'episode' not get the green light? This would have been great and better than half of the S2 episodes we got.]

7. Triangle:
Jamie falls for an attractive topsider and turns to Catherine for advise and support as she pursues this secret love. Meanwhile, Mouse confesses to Vincent his love for Jamie with the hope that Vincent will help him become Jamie's ideal suitor. Ultimately Jamie learns that the love she sought above was already present below. Mouse learns that the only way to win Jamie's love is to be true to himself.
[Although this would have given secondary characters a chance to shine, the storyline was dropped. Interestingly, the 'love being where you least expect it' theme was used in season 3's climatic two-parter Legaies and The Reckoning]

8. Sunset, Sunrise:
Catherine wants to show Vincent the sunrise and sunset at a magical place of her childhood, a mountain lake. Their adventure begins as a quest to spirit Vincent out of the city, but becomes a nightmare. But at the sight of the ssunrise they both agree it was worth it.
[part of this storyline was worked into Remember Love]

9. A Tale Told:
Catherine comes down with a bad case of the flu and must stay home to recover. Vincent visits and when he asks Catherine if she would like him to read to her she would prefer it if he would make up a story. As Vincent tells the tale, Catherine envisions herself and Vincent as the heroine and hero of his story. And when Vincent completes his story with an unsatisfactory conclusion, Catherine insists that he provide the happy ending she knows they both desire. [The writer of the book thinks this was an interesting storyline, but it sounds pretty boring to me actually]

10. Father relives his betrayal:
Father is called above to fulfill an important mission and finds himself confronting the scientist who betrayed him during the HUAC hearings.
[would have been an interesting sequal to S1's Song of Orpheus]

11. The Return of Elliot Burch:
Cullen's artistry is fulfilled when Catherine arranges for him to have an exhibit of his works. Elliot Burch attends the exhibit and cannot comprehend how Cullen (who he takes to be Catherine's secret lover) was able to win Catherine's heart. Unable to find out anything about Cullen's background, he hires a private detective to determine who he is and where he comes from.
[a variation of the other story of the same name, which in my opinion was better. Why pull Cullen in?]

12. The Wishing Well:
There is a wishing well in Central Park that empties into the tunnels. When the children hear an older gentleman make a wish to be reunited with his true love, they tell Vincent who enlists Catherine and together they are able to reunite the lovers
[sounds very boring to me as well]

13. The Blind Date:
As a favor to Joe, Catherine agrees to go on a blind date with this heartbroken cousin. During the course of the evening the blind date will get a glimpse of Catherine's 'secret life'. We will view her life from the blind date's point of view.
[I for one would have seen something like this happen, but let Joe be the one who would get a glimpse of Catherine's secret life, but the decides not to tell her about it.]

14. Time of Madness:
Many years ago, Vincent endured an horrific episode in which he lost control of his beastial side. Now that same madness has returned and it is worse than before. Believing that he will never regain control, Vincent says good-bye to all his loved ones and retreats to the deepest tunnels to die.
[as we all know, aspects of this story made its self known in the trilogy that wrapped up this season]

15. Crime of Passion:
Brooke, a young woman from below, falls in love with a topsider. Vincent and Catherine serve as go-between and bring the two lovers together. Unfortunately, a young man from the tunnels who has grown up with Brooke and has always loved her, is devastated by Brooke's new love and refuses to accept it. When it becomes apparent that Brooke has choses to leave the world below to be with her lover, the spurned lover murders his rival. The world below conducts a murder 'trial' in which it is decided that the murderer is to be banished from their world.
[I wonder if this story was put aside and reworked as A gentle Rain!?]

16. And Miles To Go Before I Sleep:
Vincent tells the children the story of his Halloween evening out with Catherine.[This probably would have been the show's second Halloween episode, but was abandoned when the 1988 Writer's Strike prevented them from getting the show on the air in time for the holiday]

So, what do you guys think of these abandoned stories? I would have loved the first Return of Elliot Burch one and The Darkes Night. What made that night the darkest one of Vincent's life? And of course Sunset, Sunrise. That would have been so much better that Rememeber Love.

I like the sound of this one!

No tears please, it's a waste of good suffering.

Out of the 15 stories this is the one you liked most? Really? Not The Darkest Night or The Return of Elliot Burch? :-)

reply

*Re-reads synopses*

Yes! What can I say? I'm a sucker for a bit of schmaltz.

Darkest Night sounds OK, but as V didn't look as if he was in despair in the pilot it doesn't really fit in with established continuity. I never much liked the Elliot Burch eps, mainly because Catherine occasionally seemed to consider him as a suitor.

No tears please, it's a waste of good suffering.

reply

Well, I disagree, haha.
First of all, we didn't see Vincent until halfway into the pilot, second of all, to me he comes across as pretty depressed the whole time Cathy is below.

I love the Elliot eps and hated to see him die in the 3rd season.

reply

"The darkest night" could have been a 3rd season episode if it has continued. I would have really liked to see that one!

10. Father relives his betrayal:

[would have been an interesting sequal to S1's Song of Orpheus]

I would have liked this one. The testing that Father opposed as described in "Song of Orpheus" suggested to me a possible origin for Vincent, as a result of some sort of mutation.

The world below conducts a murder 'trial' in which it is decided that the murderer is to be banished from their world.
[I wonder if this story was put aside and reworked as A gentle Rain!?]

Maybe not "A Gentle Rain" since that was about a topsider who escaped below after something he did above. About the only part used from this story was Brooke and her fellow tunneler sweetheart Stephen, who was killed in "Snow."

There was another unseen episode you didn't mention called "The Subterranean Homesick Blues," which went into Mary's backstory, including I think her son.

I liked some of this, I wonder if they were made into graphic novels for us loyal fans.

Thanks for sharing! I think Darkest Night had the most potential. I wouldn't have minded A Tale Told because I love the dynamics of their relationship. I can see where Gross is coming from. I think it could have been interesting if it was actually incorporated into the show eventually, as a foreshadowing or mirroring something that happens, depending on the content of the story.

Some of the others could have done well for developing other characters. It's a bit hard to say which were best without more detail, much of it depends on the writing/complete storyline. I also agree with you on Blind Date, though I'm not sure I would want Joe to keep it from her, for long anyway.

I love seeing tidbits like this on shows/movies, even if it's a bit frustrating that they will never come to fruition.

Rest in Peace Lee Thompson Young. An angel gone too soon.
