The underground

Personally I found the show way too saccharine. I was only interested because of the idea of a literal underground culture beneath the Big Apple. I think the producers could have had a winner on their hands if they had focused on that premise as the foundation of the series rather than a romantic fairy tale.

Then it would be a different story other than "Beauty and the Beast", would it not?

IMHO, I think it had the right balance of romance and reality blended together to make these stories stand the test of time even today. As well, while I think all the actors and actresses did their part in making the series entertaining, I marvel at Ron Perlman's performance of Vincent, as he portrayed him as a flawed, yet, altruistic man. I feel if it wasn't for his incredible acting, the show would've been more of a caricature in nature.
