Why such a low rating?

While no one will ever mistake this movie for "The Godfather", I thought that this movie was innocent fun for the teenage and pre-teen audience. I remember seeing this movie as a kid and it was enjoyable. I felt that it should have gotten in the 5.0-6.0 ratings range.

It's even good for adults. It's a good reminder to lighten up and not forget your inner child. Ernest was the new Three Stooges.

People are overly critical morons

OP: " I felt that it should have gotten in the 5.0-6.0 ratings range."

This suggests the score, at the time this topic was created, was 4.9 or below.
It is now 5.1 (as of 2013/12/16), and has an "arithmetic mean" (probably it's true score) of 5.6.

Furthermore, believe it or not, it's fresh! ----> http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/ernest_goes_to_camp/

And anyway, regardless of the ratings: This movie had a production budget of $3M and grossed $23.5M.

All-in-all, there's apparently no need for pity.

Kids these days want CGI and lots of explosions (hence why Michael Bay movies keep being made) and frankly this one can't compete in that department.
I watched the movie yesterday for the first time in 2 decades and it still holds up. My favorite scenes still are around the two bozo cooks and their magic food mixing machine

I watched this movie quite a bit as a kid. It still seems kind of fresh.
