Open Threat?

How did Alec know about Clive and Maurice? Did he just assume or did he catch them in the act? Is this in the book because it is not in the movie?

reply

!!!!!!! DON'T READ WHAT FOLLOWS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM "mAURICE"!!!!!!!!!

Alec guessed but also we see in the film that he is close to Simcox, who is Clive's personnal servant. You see him in different scenes and without word you understand he knows about Clive and Maurice. He looks at Maurice in a strange way first time he comes to Pendersleigh, then he sees them in the woods, when they are out for a ride, then when Clive comes back to Pendersleigh after he fainted at Maurice's place he tells Clive about Risley's trial... and when Alec tells him Maurice 'is a gentleman" Simcox has a very ironic grin...

The truth is known by all the servants who talk more to eachother than the stiff upper lip relatives of the two young men.

Even the maid who enters the blue room when Clive and Maurice are on the bed together, she has a face that doesn't lie and you know she's guessed something...

But you don't have more details in the book, it's quite as in the film. For example you don't have a scene where one of the servants sees Clive and Maurice kissing.

Hope I answered.

Gosh it's just on month since I have the dvd and I already know the film by heart... I must be sick... ;-)

reply

No that's fully understandable... you're not sick. If you are, then I must be too!

Simcox also guesses about Scudder and Maurice. The comments he makes about the ladder at maurice's window and the mud on the carpet is a dead giveaway.

THE MAN SERVANT SIMCOX KNOWS WHO IS DOING WHOM, I BELIVE HE SIMCOX IS A CLOSET CASE..

reply

No, my dear, he is simply a honey-coated voyeur, sipping from the jug of slashy goodness!

In fact, one of the main Victorian ideas well presented in the film is that the servants are considered so insignificant that they are completely ignored, except for doing their job. This is why neither tried to hide thier intimacy from the servant girl in the bedroom. She obviously doesn't approve, but since she is just a servant there isn't even an attempt to hide their feelings in front of her. So it is not at all surprising that Scudder would have known about them before he decided to "seduce" Maurice.

Yes! Also in the film after Clive and Ann are married, when everyone is leaving the church Maurice is standing to the side watch them in despair; we see Simcox walking past watching Maurice watch Clive and Ann. Simcox gives Maurice this look like he knows Maurice is hurting. Simcox knew the deal and the servants most definitely were whispering about.

In the book, during the museum scene, Alec has a letter Maurice had written to Clive during their relationship. It's around pg 221. how he got the letter, i haven't a clue.

Don't point that gun at him, he's an unpaid intern.~Steve Zissou
