Water Lillies! Please help!

I cant for the life of me understand what they say to each other the night after when Alec says something about water lillies? And gentlemen diving?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

First he says he has to roll the cricket pitch for the match, but the boat is done (remember, before Maurice heard Alec had bailed out the boat). Then Alec says that Mr. London (Pippa's husband, Clive's brother-in-law) dived into the water lillies. Someone told Alec that all young gentleman knew how to dive, and he says he never learned to because it seems more natural not to let your head get under the water.

Holding out hope for The Front Runner.

I know this thread is over 2 years old but I also have a question about this.

What did Maurice say right AFTER that exchange? He says he was taught something and Alec tells him that he was taught what wasn't the case.

I replayed it a few times but can't figure out what Maurice says he was taught.
Something something hair wet?

Anyone know?

Just saw the movie, amazing, isn't it? :)

Hmmm, uh... just rewatched, the first time I saw it I thought Maurice said something like, "When I was young they taught me I'd find a woman and get married", but I guess I was wrong because rewatching it he definitely says "hair wet".

I think Alec says, "I thought drowning before your day-" and then Maurice cuts him off and says "I was taught I'd get ill if I got my hair wet." I'm almost positive he says that. Glad I could help. :)

I have nothing witty to say here.

Thanks, Valley. I just bought the movie and rewatched it - I had watched it most recently on youtube and the sound wasn't great.

I think I heard it clearly on the dvd: "I was taught I'd get ill if I didn't get my hair wet". That had been bugging me.

"I was taught I'd get ill if I didn't get my hair wet".

"You were taught what wasn't the case"

I think that little exchange was quite symbolic as for what society wants them to believe about homosexuality - that it is wrong - what isn't the case. It's very telling that Alec is the one who tells Maurice that what he was told wasn't the case.
