This Is One Film That SHOULD Be Remade

Today, people would appreciate it more, and it's a really important piece of history. I hate remakes, but this is one instance where I think it's necessary.

reply

Generally, movies are remade to improve them or to change them to appeal to a modern audience. What needs to be changed?

reply

To "improve them"???

Give me a break. Movies are almost always made to capitalize on the reputation and name-recognition of the earlier version.

Most remakes are failures (name an exception).

Even sequels usually fare poorly.

"Serials" like the Bond flicks can occasionally be good, but the first few (with Connery) are by far the best.

reply

They could re-release it instead. I wouldn't object to that, but a re-make? Nooo. :(

reply

Yeah, I'd like a re-release but not a remake. The film was phenomenally good the first time around.

Holding out hope for The Front Runner.

remade??? NO!!!

as one poster writes, it was perfect the first time around.

i think part of the reason why it's so good, because they cast leads who weren't famous at the time. if they did a remake, they'll cast the bignames in hollywood and any popular british actor. it wouldn't be the same and the suspension of belief would be limited because i'll remember the last movie they were in.

and most importantly...you just can't do any better than james wilby and rupert graves.

reply

I agree with you: they could re-release MAURICE, this time including the deleted scenes ;-), but re-make it...? NO WAY.

reply

They should definitely re-release and try to put the deleted scenes back in. But they first need to find better quality versions of the deleted scenes, which will be quite difficult.

reply

why? it's already perfect.

reply

There's no reason for this - or many others - to be remade. Its perfect the way it is.

i'd like a mini-series adaption of the book. make a page-to-screen transformation like the TV mini-series of "Brideshead Revisited". (i don't mind long running time. when you love something, you don't want it ever ends.) the book was written beautifully. BUT, BUT, under one condition. THEY HAVE TO FIND 2 GREAT (NOT FAMOUS)YOUNG BRITISH ACTORS TO MATCH UP WITH JW/RG. (of course, who plays Clive is equally important.)

reply

Unlike Brideshead, I agree that this could do with a remake. There is such a lot in the book that simply hasn't transferred to the screen well, or in some cases at all, possibly because of the script writer's own lack of understanding of the subject matter or a simple unwillingness or inability to convey some of the subtexts. While I gave this a high rating, it doesn't seem to me to flow well. The book doesn't flow that well either, but a good writer could I think pull things together rather better. This is not to decry the efforts of James Ivory, one of the great directors, but possibly not one of the greatest screen adapters.

reply

I thought the film structurally perfect.

One might imagine an expanded version, including scenes and situations that weren't included in the original, but to start from scratch with new actors and a completely new production crew--I think you'd find it would probably fail in some of the ways the Ivory version succeeded. It's a big gamble. When a movie succeeds on many levels, as this one does, it doesn't follow that starting over 20 years later is going to "improve" the earlier version. It's a completely new roll of the dice.

God forbid that this movie should ever be remade. It's perfect, just like it is, and any remake would ruin it.

Besides, no remake could come even near the fine quality of this film.

Re-release this in the cinema for the 25th anniversary ! No remake ! It's perfect !

reply

Although I adore the movie - I agree it is about as perfect as one can get, I still think a remake can be fun. People have been playing Shakespeare for 300 years, why not one more round of Maurice? :)
