Why did the mom not give her son the letters?

She reads them and hides them away. Yet wants her son to be dragged across country in a Rig with his dad..

Stallone hadn’t physically showed up in a long time, so she may have figured he wouldn’t show up ever again.

So she probably didn’t want her son to read the letters, develop affection to the father, and build a desire to see the father (who wouldn’t show). She wanted her son to forget.
