You can actually find the answer on several youtube videos that explains Gekko's modus operandi and how he makes money in the movie. As for accuracy, it's a story of fiction where it tethers the reality of whether or not Gordon and Bud can avoid Stockwatch and the SEC's eagle-eyes for so long. Gekko had been doing and making money from inside information for a while but was avoiding detection but his lavish and flamboyant personality makes one wonder how he fooled the Feds from tracing his secret sauce.

But I don't work in Wall Street. I just read a lot about it, about private equity firms (That is what Gekko does) like KKR.

In the books I read they hate inside information, because once they know they can't make a move. They are far too rich to go to jail for money.
