Rated best British comedy since 1980

Withnail and I, for me, is one of the best British comedies of all time. Top10Films has rated it the best British comedy film since 1980. Check it out here:

It's the best British comedy since 1900 let alone 1980. The best British, nay the best worldwide comedy, of all time.

Really? What was funny about it? I had a few uncomfortable chuckles when drunk or stoned people were stumbling around, but I never actually laughed at anything.

What did you find funny?

reply

It's more of a drama with dark humour than a comedy.

reply

It's one of those films that if you had any pretensions to loving cinema and were in your late teens or twenties in the eighties or nineties, then you were almost obliged to "love". But get anyone drunk enough and press the point and many people will admit they genuinely loathe it.

This is a highly quotable and yet thoroughly unloveable film.

reply

Yes. That's a good summary. This movie appears to have been made soley that pretentious cinemaphiles can have something to love.

To not find this movie funny, one must have either had a mindless comedy in mind while watching it or has very a different taste compared to me. The humour is situational, dark and self deprecating. I'd imagine people who don’t appreciate self deprecating wit are more likely to be pretentious aren’t they. Anyhows, each to his own, I absolutely love this movie and seem to grow even fonder of it when drunk if anything.

It probably depends what kind of comedy you like. I tend to find films funniest when it comes naturally in the writing; they're not necessarily trying to make you laugh all the time, they're telling a story with good characters, dialogue and situations which happen to be funny. So things like this, 'The Big Lebowski' and even 'Spinal Tap' will always appeal to me more than those movies which are just "DERPY DERP LOOK AT THEM GO!" for 90 minutes straight.

These bastards!

I laugh out loud just thinking about this movie.

people who don't enjoy the movie are expecting a wham-bang-bang comedy, they have no attention span nor appreciation of what the film is thematicly about.

This movie plays out like a documentary about these two morons, every scene follows them. As a brit, I also find it hilarious the movie mocks our attrocious weather, there is nothing I hate more than driving or walking in the rain, so that jump cut after "We can't leave! I need atleast an hour for dinner" nearly gave me a heart attack!

reply

If I like something and you don't like it you must be a moron because anything I like is amazing!

There you go, I shortened your post for you.

I think so, but you may need to originate from the sceptred isle and demi-paradise to "get" this film.
