Homosexuality

Is the homosexuality being alluded to several times between Withnail & "I", serious or is it meant to be taken as a joke?
I heard the director had an affair with an Italian director when he was still acting and quite young as well....

What F..KER said that?

He landed a "plum role" with a top Italian director as a boy? Probably on a tenner a day & I know what for; £2.10 a tit and a fiver for his arse!!!

What if everyone started telling the truth?

Just for comic value I think. "I"'s quite clearly not gay from what I saw (he claims he is "not homosexual", there's no reason not to believe him), but Withnail might well be. It's not really suggested if he is or isn't in what I can remember of the film.

Saying that, "I" does come out with a very impressive account of an affair with Withnail, considering it's apparently fictional... (that was a joke before someone corrects me).

If memory serves me correctly, the director of Withnail had a bit-part in a film by Visconti (possibly Death In Venice), or was it Zeferelli's something or other, I forget which, and attracted unwanted attentions from said director. The character of Monty, and his pursual of 'I', is supposedly a nod to this uncomfortable experience.

Yes. Robinson claimed to have been the target of unwanted sexual advances by Franco Zeffirelli during the filming of 'Romeo and Juliet' (in which he played Benvolio). Monty is (loosely?) based on Zeffirelli.

Marwood (I) seems to be straight, although Withnail's reference to Hamlet "Man delights not me: no, nor women neither. Nor women neither." posed a hint to me. I doubt if he has any feelings of the sort for Marwood though.
