Why only New York or L.A.

Alright I know still today but even more so back then those are the 2 main cities when talking about America and I understand the whole Queens concept but did anyone else feel like WTF when he said Americas so big then says which one New York or L.A. I mean what about Chicago, Miami, Philly and the rest of the U.S. Queens could still be the winner but more suggestions than 2 couldve been mentioned....

They were not really familiar with the US. Naturally they would choose a large city that is well known. If you were visiting a foreign country for the first time you are more likely to go to the largest cities.

reply

It was a gag. They say something like "America, there are so many options. So which should we choose? America or LA?", joking that that's the two [only] cities most foreigners think of when they think about USA.

reply

Yeah, I was surprised they didn't say something like "We should either check out Boise, Idaho or Bowling Green, Kentucky".

well that would have went over everyone's head, or at least mine. i just found out there is a bowling green KY. i thought it was just Ohio

I'm from Lexington, KY and I can tell you for a fact Lexington has some of the hottest women anywhere. It is really crazy but true. I believe a number of years ago Playboy even said UK had the second hottest women on campus behind UCLA. Believe me, Kentucky women are really pretty. At least Lexington and Louisville anyway. And I went to Morehead State which is 65 miles east of Lexington and those chicks were really hot too. That odd stereotype my state gets is really only the far east, close to Virginia.

I always wanted to know what woulda happened if the coin came up Los Angeles?

Do you look at a menu and say OK?

reply

That would be a great twist for a remake! They pin lands on LA and they go to Hollywood where they're told are many queens. The bar scene where they meet many women could be really interesting!

reply

Should have been the sequel.

You have the film pretty much on par up to the coin flip scene where it lands on tails instead of heads.

They go off to a wacky LA adventure.

There's no Black Awareness week this time, they wind themselves up at a KKK rally.

LOL, really?

Exactly because of the fact u speak off, LA and NY are the cities best known from America.

I live in Holland, Foreigners only know Amsterdam, but theres so much more.

reply

I live in Holland, Foreigners only know Amsterdam, but theres so much more.

Nah, there isn't .

reply

That's the joke... because nowhere in America matters except NY and LA. Obviously the majority of the population doens't live in either city, but the majority of the population here are also mouthbreathing NASCAR worshipping Jesus freaks with 9 teeth in their inbred skulls. Outside of NYC and LA, nothing really matters. The terrorists could nuke everything between the two and I don't think anybody worth anything would care either way. There's a reason they call it "the flyover."

(Obviously I'm being slightly harsh, but the general gist of my elitist rant is still true)

no, you're a moron

Most tv shows and movies based here in the states take place in either of those two places, with Chicago a distant third. That's why they know them.

I also think it's a bit of a joke towards Americans who only have a certain few destinations in mind when visiting other countries.
Like in Jackie Brown, when she's off to Spain and he asks if she's going to 'Madrid or Barcelona'... Same thing really :)

reply

How is it a joke towards americans when the two characters play Africans??

reply

Seriously, who cares if he only mentioned two cities. Whats the big deal.

In addition to working as a joke, I can say from personal experience that when I travel abroad and tell someone I'm from the US they tend to ask California or New York. No one has ever asked, oh, are you from Cincinnati.

Chicago is sooo underrated...

Uncle sandler went to the mall!!

reply

"Chicago is sooo underrated... "

Chicago is like 1/3rd of Manhattan combined with the South Bronx, Bed Stuy, and Newark.

Philly is like Brooklyn if there was no Manhattan

Huh?

reply

I always assumed it was because the majority of movies and TV shows that take place in big cities are either centered in New York or Los Angeles. It's more of joke about Hollywood studios and the film industry, itself, than anything else.

It's just because those are the cities foreigners are most familiar with. Let's say you were going to China to find a bride - you would probably go to Beijing, Shanghai or Hong Kong instead of Tianjin or Shenzhen, even though those are both fairly large cities as well. And yes, I think it's also a joke about how many foreigners immediately think of only L.A. and New York when they think of America.

Made you look!

reply

I agree....you think they would think of Georgia or Texas.

reply

Right! Remember Ghostbusters? When they were teasing the main ghost about picking NY where it is cold and harsh instead of LA? Funny. :)
