Did you happen to catch the professional football contest on television

Oh sir, the Giants of New York took on the Packers of Green Bay. And in the end, the Giants triumphed by kicking an oblong ball made of pigskin through a big H. It was a most ripping victory.

Because that's sort of exactly what John Amos said to Hakeem when he was talking that game in Amos' office. That scene kind of made me made because Hakeem was just trying to be social and he was an immigrant and so he didn't yet know the ways of American life and Amos had to cop an attitude with him.

reply

Akeem...not Hakeem.

That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it.

reply

Yeah I was suprised by the reaction of the Amos character. I thought he'd say something like "get back to work I'm not paying you for chit-chat" but that line isn't as funny as the actual line about not doing drugs.

reply

He didn't know much about Akeem so he thought he was on drugs because of what he said.

reply

It was just an 80's thing. A riff on Nancy Reagan's anti-drug campaign which consisted of "Just say no".

Lawrence Taylor used a similar line in The Waterboy. "Don't smoke crack". (unfortunately we later learned LT had a pretty bad cocaine habit himself)

reply

L.T.'s drug problem was known long before The Waterboy was in theaters.

reply

Nancy was right. I was in high school in the late '60s and early '70s, the golden age of drugs. I "just said no". Yes, it really was that simple, if you had a properly functioning brain.
