Elena was kind of an idiot (spoilers for extended cut)
If you think about it, assuming Elena did love Toto, her actions were incredibly dumb. She sends one note to Toto and then just goes on with her life? When Toto never contacted her, didn't it occur to her that the message might not have reached him...especially knowing (or at least she should have known) that Alfredo, who was against their union, could find and destroy the note?
What was she thinking when Toto didn't respond? That the guy who loved her enough to stand miserably outside her window every single night for weeks would just blow her off? She never follows up or attempts to locate Toto. It's ridiculous.
