Palazzo Adriano

We're just back from a holiday in Sicily. It's a beautiful place, but very run down in places with many abandoned buildings both old and half constructed.

We took the opportunity to visit Palazzo Adriano where the town square and cinema scenes were shot. It is a lovely square. It felt weird being there having watched it quite a few times on screen

The town clearly doesn't get many tourists. We went to the municipal offices and they opened up the small museum they've got about the making of the film. It has a lot of photos of the filming and a couple of props like Alfredo's bike and some seats from the cinema. They have a wooden model of the village showing where the cinema was constructed for the film. The houses, fountain, school, clock tower and church on the square are all real and still there.

We don't speak Italian and they didn't speak English, but we understood them said they get a few visitors - a lot of Japanese in particular. We signed the visitors book and the last people to visit were four days before us.

Has anyone else visited?

I really want to go there! How easy is it to find?

Not that easy I'd say.

We stayed in Agrigento on the south coast and drove north cross country for a maybe 1.5 - 2 hours. Some of the roads we went on were not great - including one that was completely deformed and we grounded the front of the car. Some of the scenery and villages you see are lovely. It's a similar distance from the north coast too. It's just south of Corleone of Godfather fame - although that film was actually filmed elsewhere.

The village is not set up for tourists at all. We found one restaurant who did not know what to do with us! It was quite weird being there.

Sicily itself is fantastic and worth a visit anyway. Very friendly and loads of history - we visited 4 world heritage sites in a week (if that floats your boat) including a Roman Villa with the most extensive Roman Mosaics in the world and the Valley of the Temples - Greek temples from 2500 years ago. Well worth a trip.
