Future Claire

That part never made any sense to me. She was caring and unselfish, hence the reason why her and Frank followed different paths in their lives. If that's the case, why would she suddenly change who she is and become more like Frank when she got older? Seems very unusual for someone who was running a temporary shelter for the poor and homeless. Good movie overall, but this part did not make any sense whatsoever.

It wasn't that she hated kids, she hated them because they were poor and dirty and 'had no place' amongst the rich hoiti toiti bitches.


I'll admit I never really got that whole scene either, but my thing as a kid was I thought Claire, even though she and Frank were never married, she looked to me like at this time she KNEW about his death and was kind of sporting a widow look and I thought that THAT'S why she had that black veiled hat on and turned and said 'Thanks a lot, Lumpy' and turned back, trying to smile and laugh but you could tell she was choking up.

Well, the idea was to show that Claire changed too over the years and that now she is this uptight snooty person who doesn't care about poor people anymore. By the way, doesn't it look like her face is covered in white makeup?

The scene is based on the Frank's "Scrape them off...." comment. However, Frank would have never been in contact with Claire to speak this comment were it not for his visit from his dead boss and his Ghost of Christmas Past experience.

So basically, Claire's future state of mind is solely dependent upon Frank's present ghost experience. A flaw in an otherwise great movie.
