Michael McKean is a godsend in this movie

McKean lends his almighty class to this movie to really force it over the line as a movie of genuine quality, I love the relationship he has with Johnny, and the mistrust the robot has for him...which is later overcome when Fred helps him to recover, the character of Fred makes SC2 memorable.

I agree. I just rewatched the movie for the first time in probably 15 - 20 years (watched it DOZENS of times as a kid), and realized just how much McKean brought to the movie. Don't think it would have been the same without him.
