The rate of decay depends on different things like temperature and climate, so that might have sped the process up; but it might be a bit too soon even under normal circumstances. Though, I don't think we were ever told what the time span was in this (days, weeks or a month or so).

My theory is that it was summer and in the woods cause many of the corpses to decay.
