Goodbyeee

I watched the last episode last night and cried! How many other comedies are brave enough to end so sadly and movingly?

I usually hate when sitcoms and comedy shows try to make you both LAUGH and CRY. They can be funny and successful, too, but it's always groan-inducing, boring and jarring when the show that JUST made you laugh or giggle, expects you to suddenly feel sad, depressed or cry.

It's like "ok, we made you laugh, now CRY for us, damnit!"

It just doesn't fit, and to me, that's not brave, that's the most cowardly thing you can do, as you are PANDERING instead of being a funny genius. It's the difference between Seinfeld (only humor, no tearjerking soap, unless to be made fun of) and Frasier (always these too serious dramatic soap moments instead of just keeping it fun and funny).

However, when Black Adder did this, it was powerful, impactful and because of the reality of it (after all, this DID happen in history, generally speaking), it really makes you think and cry at the same time. Why do powerful psychopaths get to do this to people? Why do a handful of idiots with power get to make masses of men murder each other, even against their consent?

The TRUE will of the men was shown in the football match between supposed enemies. During those few moments, they weren't enemies, they weren't even men - they were just humans, people having fun with each other, without distinctions and hatred. They even shared their treasures, like tobacco and stuff.

Then they were ordered to go back to mindlessly murdering masses of each other. It's so horrible, I can't understand how this was allowed to happen (or how even the situation today is allowed to happen).

Black Adder was a brilliant, well-written comedy show with lots of charismatic performances and even a radiant Leo-woman as the object of erotic beauty. It dared say things, and yet it was all done in good taste.

They couldn't have ended it better, as sad as it was.

Having said that, I am REALLY glad they did the 'happy ending' much later, where they time travel and such. Phew.

One of the best final sitcom episodes of all time.
