How did the officers know to have the couple sit on the other bed in their room while the officers checked the first bed? Were they tipped off or something?

No it would have been a matter of routine to check both beds, if they checked one, only stands to reason they would check the other! As for a 'Tip', I do remember the one officer tell the female, they had been given a heads up about the amount of phonecalls going to that room, from the hotel switchboard. So obviously hotel staff tipped off the police.
