Has anyone seen the other 4 films in the series?

I'm talking about Return to Lonesome Dove, Streets of Laredo, Dead Man's Walk, and Comanche Moon. If so, how do you rate them?

The films aren't bad at all and if you don't plan on reading the books, it's the only way to see Gus and Call in their 20's!
Didn't see the series.

I think they are all worthwhile - more or less. As the other poster said, Comanche Moon and Dead Man's Walk show us the very young Gus and Call. Then, of course, Lonesome Dove, and the "closing chapter", Streets of Laredo. If you can tolerate/adjust to different actors playing familiar parts, and with a few "missing pieces", you will probably enjoy each version for its own merits, and forgive its flaws.

Comanche Moon is very good! I'd say much better than the one with Voight and Busey. Yes, Gary was in this series too. In this one, he played July Johnson's buckskin horse. You can tell its Gary when you see the horse smile.

It's been six or seven years since I've watched any of those but I remember them being good. I liked Return to Lonesome Dove the best, even though it was made without McMurtry's blessing and he made sure to contradict it when he wrote Streets of Laredo.

Iforget the name, but the sequel wherr James Garner plays an oldar Woodrow Call left a bad taste. Suspicion that it was an example of "sequelitis". The magic of the original was gone.

reply

What's funny is Garner was a consideration for Gus in prescreening for Lonesome Dove, as was Tommy Lee Jones. McMurtry actually wanted the two leads as the opposite characters.

I wastched Streets of Loredo couple of years ago *not* knowing it to be part of the Lonesome Dove saga. I enjoyed it as a western.

I am currently watching Lonesome Dove for the first time.

I enjoyed lonesome dove and return to lonesome dove
Couldn't get into streets of Laredo or the one when they were young
