I vaguely remember this being explained in the cartoon at some point: One of the Van Houten's are from Shelbyville and a different branch of the Van Houten's. (Or something to that effect)

I don't recall Nelson's parents!! Just looked them up. Nelson is definitely his father's son. I don't think he looks all that much like his mother. Certainly not to the level that Milhouse's parents look alike.

People tend to be attracted to people who remind them of themselves, either physically or mentally. It's part of our natural vanity. That's why really good looking people tend to marry other really good looking people.
