Where does it take place on a map, per the opening zoom in?

Once it gets past the Mississippi River, the landmarks are off, but it looks like it's somewhere in Iowa between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.

What do you think?

reply

My guess is that its a fictional suburb of Des Moines.

I'm from Cedar Rapids. Since Des Moines didn't really have much for suburbs in the 80s (still doesn't, really), I always assumed they meant Chicago suburbs, since there are about a zillion of those.

Agreed. It looks like Illinois when they're zooming in and out.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's Illinois. But I'm guessing they didn't specify in the movie because they wanted the viewer to think this could happen in ANY town or suburb. Even your own. *cue the sinister Burbs' music score*

Indeed. Yeah, even I've been noticing a strange smell around my neighborhood lately. Kind of like death...

There's a few too many hills in the background for it to be Iowa. One of the film's only flaws is that it so obviously looks like what it is, a studio back lot.

reply

I was filmed in California. Los Angeles and Universal Studios backlot.

reply

Way too far west of Lake Michigan to be set in Illinois.

I just watched the intro, and my best guess is that it is supposed to be set near Iowa City, Iowa. I seem to recall that Dr. Klopek was employed by a university, and Iowa City is where the University of Iowa is located.

reply

And I thought I had some weird neighbors when I lived in Iowa City.
