okay, well most of these guys were middle aged, or at least around 30, plus not all of them were lookers, that and he was saying it as a joke, if you listen to the line right before he says something along the lines of "knowing the good taste of the females in this town if you're lucky you might get laid," its a coach thing, i used to get it all the time from my baseball and football coach.
And as for the roughest bar in town risking injury, well i've got a few rebuttles to that,
1. This just came to me as i watched this movie yesterday, i think he took them to that bar in order for them to get into a fight so they'd have that first stepping stone to looking out for each other and becoming a team.
2. They are world class martial Artists, i'm pretty sure they could handle themselves in a bar fight.
3. Its not like the tournament was the next day, they had 3 months to go plus they always had replacements, its harsh but true.

Yeah...the guys weren't that bad looking....the only one who was hideous was Chris Penn.
It wasn't a rough bar....it was more a redneck country bar and the only reason they got into that fight was because "Burt" was ignoring his girlfriend!
And if nobody knows it...Burt was played by Kane Hodder who played Jason in Friday the 13th movies!

actually i'm 23 and seeing as how the average male lifespan is approximately 70 years, anywhere between 30-35 is technically considered middle age, factor in the stress that martial arts competitions inflict on the body and i'm sure their lifespans would significantly be reduced, so like i said, middle aged or AT LEAST 30, thank you very much,

Allow me to display my Superhuman power (I should be on Heroes!) of being able to remember and recite just about every line from every movie I have ever seen.

But I have to agree that it was most likely a crazy way to build team unity as to why Coach Cuzo was just sitting there enjoying a drink while they were fighting and not really caring about them fighting.
I pointed out Kane Hodder to my wife...unfortunately she wasn't too enthused. I was terribly excited because I can now use him in my own variation of the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game where I just link people to people. Thank you Kane!
