Daft Ending?

Although you won't get any arguement from me as to whether this is a great film, there's one thing that really bugged me at the end. When Dae Han is out on his feet and Tommy is about to kick his teeth down his throat, why didn't Tommy just tap him and watch him go down??? That way he wouldn't have killed him but still would have taken the point???

I know I'm probably looking at this too logically, and had this happened there wouldn't have been the "beautiful" ending, but I just don't get why nobody else has brought this up?

Great film though.

I dont think, he could have simply gone for a tap.

Like me it would have been everything or nothing and I think he knew that everything would have killed him

reply

i agree. even if the tap didnt score a point dae han would have fallen, and he was pretty messed up anywas so he probably wouldnt have been able to get back up, if memory serves me that should have made tommy an automatic winner. still probably they knew how they wanted it to end and probably thought it was the best way. i agree.

Every time I've watched this movie since I was a kid I've thought the same thing. It would have been a knockout. He needed one more point to tie it up, and a valid point would have likely killed Dae Han, but a knockout would have won right away.

reply

You raise a valid point that I wondered when I saw it many years ago. Still, the ending was the best part of the movie. Absolutely awesome.

reply

I'm glad it ended the way it did. It shows the true spirit of Martial Arts, and actually inspired me into taking up a class.

I think that he would not have been able to do anything apart from a killing blow, and his respect for the life of another human being held him back, even through his hatred for Dae Han's past actions.

I didn't like part 2 as much - it had no positive message like this to give to it's audience.

sure it did, that vegas is an evil place where gambling on illegal pit fights goes on, but i guess now its just that gay crappy UFC whatever.

tommy probably didnt knock him down because dae han kept the memory of his brother alive or something.

reply

the reason tommy didn't just knock dae han over is because he had spent all of his growing/grown up life training for the moment where he hoped he would meet the man who killed his brother and alas that moment did come and when dae hans fate was in his hands, that terrible time of human conflict came where he had to decide wether he was a killer himself or just a person who has never really dealt with the tragedy of his brothers death. I have to say a have always enjoyed the 2nd best of the best but the 1st one has had an amazing impact on my life. just devastatingly brilliant!!! the last scene is up there with any major hollywood production EVER!!!

"TO SAVE A LIFE IN DEFEAT,IS TO EARN HONOUR AND VICTORY WITHIN. YOUR BROTHER TO WAS A GREAT FIGHTER, I DEEPLY REGRET YOUR LOSS, AND I OFFER MYSELF AS YOUR BROTHER!"

very very touching.

Could not have said it better myself. One of the most inspirational and truly moving movie moments made.

He read the script..... ;-)

I love the film, one of my all time favourites. And the ending is good. It actually chokes me up a tiny bit!

Obviously if the competition was real he would've just flattened him (not killed him) to take the win....but you could ask questions like this of SO many films!

No offence, and I know you kind of acknowledged it, but this is a bit of a silly question in my opinion.

*SPOILER*

As for Best of the Best 2, it's OK. but Tommy loses it in this one and does kill!! Shocker. Then come Best of the Best 3....I'm sorry but I don't see how it fits into the series. But it doesn;t stop me loving the film! haha
