Am I supposed to root for these morons?

I think it's supposed to be a comedy and something fun you don't need to take seriously.

what if they were bullied by jocks ? there was a deleted scene with this. if that scene was left intact would you root for them then ?

Because they're basically nice, kindly people with good hearts.

But being naive, sincere, and funny does! Relax and allow yourself to be entertained.

I didn't find them annoying. Yes, neither of them were Super Geniuses, but they weren't pretending to be.

You didn't see them being unkind or malicious towards anybody. In fact, they seemed to react to most things with joy. And were actually quite kind, in their own way.
