Of course horror hosts still exist. They've almost always been a staple of "local station" programming. That stuff still exists. Hell, there's a few sites on the net that list all the horror hosts and horror movie shows still being shown. Svengoolie is probably one of the more famous ones.
Even in the 80s, the point of Peter Vincent in the original Fright Night was that he was hosting a local station program, and that the movie took place in your average "Smalltown, USA". That he was a washed up horror movie actor that got fired because kids didn't want to see vampire movies anymore, but movies with killers in ski masks. He wasn't supposed to be hip or cool, only to Charlie Brewster, who was a big fan of Peter Vincent and the Fright Night television show. I think this made him becoming a REAL vampire killer so much more meaningful. A washed up actor who is on the fringe of being forgotten, ultimately becomes a hero and helps a young man vanquish an evil vampire.
Now, I didn't completely hate the reboot. I did think a lot of it was unnecessary. There was a lot of stuff thrown in that movie just for the sake of making the characters sound cool and hip(Charlie has a hip mom that understands the younger generation... LOL). It's generally one of those "soulless" reboots that everybody complains about, because it lacks heart. Even Fright Night 2 had heart.
