1989: A Year of Sequels

Many successful films were released in 1989, particularly throughout the summer. See the Lethal Weapon 2 IMDB thread titled: 1989 was one hell of a summer.

I especially remember that 1989 was touted as a year of highly anticipated sequels and latest installments of successful film franchises. A few turned out to be quite good, while many were disappointments.

Back to the Future Part II

Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (8th film of series)

Fletch Lives

The Fly II

Ghostbusters II

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (3rd film of series)

The Karate Kid, Part III (3rd film of series)

Lethal Weapon 2

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (3rd film of series)

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (5th film of series)

Fletch Lives (which I love) came out in March 1989. I wouldn't lump that in the summer list.

However you did miss License to Kill, which is one of my favorite Bond flicks but didn't get much attention due to the competition.

Sorry I didn't catch your post earlier because it looked like you were replying to someone else.

The films listed above were released throughout the year of 1989, hence the thread title - "1989: A Year of Sequels." The 1989 summer releases I referred to are the subject of another poster's thread that I also mentioned above. A link to that thread is below.

You are indeed correct that I missed: License to Kill. It definitely should have been included on this list.

I think I only saw The Fly II once. It was pretty terrible. I think it was one of those cases where they couldn't get the same actors so they had to write a weird plot.

"License to Kill" was technically a sequel too. One of the reasons LTK did not do very well at the box office was all the top grossing movies that came out that year/time like Batman and Lethal Weapon 2.

Those were both big deals then. I saw both of them in theaters. I never would have guessed the 1989 a Batman would have been the best Batman of the series.

I'm just expressing my opinion.
