More truth than fiction,unfortunately .

Kevin McCarthy was certainly good as the arrogant, tyrannical network affiliate station owner-manager.Unfortunately there is very little exaggeration in how he portrays this type of person. This is actually the way that they are. I wonder if Weird Al modeled this station one one he was familiar with, because it certainly reminds me of one here in New Orleans. The way Mc Carthy delivers those sanctimonious, hypocritical editorials is strikingly renemiscent of Phil Johnson, news director of WWL Channel 4.Like the character in UHF,their real counterparts smirkingly profess to be "serving the community" while backing to the hilt the corrupt politicians who control city hall and their Uptown masters. The scene where he tells Weird Al's girlfriend what he REALLY thinks of the community(ie. the ordinary citizen), calling them a bunch of drooling idiots whose combined IQ's isn't sufficient to enable them to tie their own shoe laces, how nice it was to have an audience composed of a bunch of spineless sheep that he had right in the palm of his hand, reflects exactly how these "journalists" look at us.In the context of a very funny movie, Weird Al has hit a very ugly nail square on its head.

I don't think it's difficult just to imagine, without personal experience.

If only there were more Philo's willing to crawl into a ceiling space to help us root them out like that.
