Today's America couldn't handle ilc

Too many groups would be "butt hurt" over depictions. Probably be too much work to just field the hate mail. Everybody is so sensitive.

I totally agree with your assumption! With all the hate, racism and seriousness in this world today...we need shows like "In living color" to bring comedy to these issues. I remember back during the Rodney King riots everyone was serious, angery and violent but In living color did hillarious sketches about the riots lol and it turned a violent situation into comedy and everyone loved it. But nowadays these type of things wouldnt be accepted on tv shows. I could definely see in living color doing sketches on police brutality, President Obama, Donald Trump, these terrible musicians, social media addicts Etc. Etc. Lol...the 90's truly was the last great decade.

Yup, alot of people take themselves very seriously. I was about to post pretty much the same thing on here after watching the show just now for the first time in adulthood. I thought "Huh, this show is pretty racy" (pun not intended) but it's not, we're collectively more wussy. This show is hilarious.

The social topics that exist today would never get ILC a green light. No production company would want to do anything with it. Just poking at the "gay" topic warrants an immediate ban on the show. Thank god I have my dvd's.

I think most people would be fine with it now b/c most people don't give a BLEEP about political correctness. I'm sure a few very loud people would complain, but not EVERYONE.

Does that include the football player who was the "butt hurt" of a joke during the live superbowl special in 1992?

reply

That was Men On Football and there were 2 "issues". First one was Damon mentioning the gerbil thing with Richard Gere and the second issue was at the end of the skit where they talked about Carl Lewis being gay. They cut it out on the DVD but you can see the uncut version here:

But yeah this show could never work in todays PC world. The gay community alone would put so much pressure on the show, it would lose all their sponsors.

Eh, In Living Color was an anomaly back then. It was notable because it was a lot more out there than other shows on American TV. People still complained even then, but it's honestly rather tame compared to a lot of later shows, like South Park or Chapelle's Show. Maybe it wouldn't air on network TV, but that's about it.

Maybe a few of the sketches wouldn't work today, but that's because they'd be considered dated in the same way a lot of stuff from 50s media wouldn't fly in the 90s.
