They Didn't Even Try To Hide This Being Top Gun In A Race Car

I know i am not the first to bring this up but man it's so obvious.. In fact Scott and Bruckheimer were likely using the Top Gun script for reference with every scene. The movies are similiar in every single way..

Maverick rides a Motorcycle

Cole rides a Motorcycle

Maverick is a rogue fighter pilot who often ignore orders from his superior officers

Cole is a rogue race car driver who butts heads with his crew chief

Maverick starts a romance with a woman who is evaluating his performance as a pilot

Cole gets involved with the female doctor who needs to give him clearance to resume his racing career

Crash landing that killed Mavericks co-pilot/friend shakes him up, so he questions himself the entire 2nd half of the movie

Cole crashes his race-car, alongside his chief rival and his confidence is shaken the 2nd half of the movie..

Final Mission Maverick is struggling to engage but snaps out of it and helps to save the day..

Final race at Daytona, Cole is in last place and out of it mentally but snaps out of it to win the race..

I think Cary Elwes was even playing the mock role of Ice Man in this thing..

But the movie is still pretty entertaining..

Sure, it's formulaic... but it's a good movie... I would dare say, even better than Top Gun, simply for the fact there wasn't as much macho BS that needed shoveling up. I loved Top Gun for years... then I grew up! Days of Thunder might be a clone of Top Gun (most of Bruckheimer's movies are), but it made money... and THAT'S what the bottom line is.

When "Days Of Thunder" was realesed in the cinema 21 years ago a newspaper advertisment described the move as being "Top Gun" on wheels!!! I enjyed the movie though!!!;-)

Cary elwes even looked a bit like Val kilmer at the time.

I'm surprised they didn't get Kenny Loggins for the soundtrack, though he might have abandoned his throne as the soundtrack king by then to go off and do his pseudo-hippie music.

As for the movie formula, if it ain't broke...
