oddly, one of Quentin Tarantino's favorite films

"It's like a f'N Sergio Leone movie with cars" direct quote.

lol, I thought maybe you were making a lame joke, but I looked it up, and it looks like it is real.

That's cool. At least I don't feel as guilty for liking this movie.

Ok, here's the full excerpt from a book entitled 'Quentin Tarantino: The Cinema of Cool' by Jeffery Dawson, and it comes from page 58:

"I like Tony better than Ridley. It's not fashionable to say that, but I do. I love Days of Thunder. I think Days of Thunder is a great f---ing film. It's like a Sergio Leone race car movie."

This is not surprising at all. Tarantino's taste in movies definitely runs the gamut. I also believe that Tony's repertoire is better than his brother Ridley's. Days of Thunder, Man on Fire, Spy Game, and Deja Vu are wonderful, entertaining movies, all with brilliant scores by Hans Zimmer and Harry Gregson-Williams.

I mean, Tony Scott is great.. True Romance kicks serious ass.. but Ridley has quite the repertoire to his name;

Legend - Cult Following, never got the recognition it deserved
Alien - One of the best Sci-Fi movies of all time
Blade Runner - Again, another all-time great Sci-Fi
Gladiator
Black Hawk Down
Matchstick Men
Kingdom Of Heaven (The Director's Cut kicks the *beep* out of the orig.)

And both Days of Thunder and Deja Vu are 'okay.. bordering on good'.. not GREAT.

I remember Tarantino also ranking Tony Scott's 'Domino' as one of his favorite films for 2005.

It's not much of a surprise to me that Tarantino likes Tony Scott better.....Tony Scott is much more stylistic. Plus he made 'True Romance' which Tarantino wrote.

This is a pretty tough one......I like Ridley too, but always at an arm's distance. I didn't "get" 'Legend'........but I do like 'Alien,' 'Blade Runner,' 'Gladiator,' 'Matchstick Men,' etc.

The thing that bothers me most about Tony Scott is sometimes his films seem very much compromised because he's worried about being commercially successful........but the man knows how to direct action and he's got a good eye - 'Crimson Tide' and 'Spy Game' were also good films.

I agree with Quentin here, in terms of making films I personally like Tony better but that's just me. I enjoy his films better and watch them more, I'm not saying Ridley's bad though by any stretch.

Days of Thunder, BHC 2, The Fan, and The Hunger I all liked and rank Days and The Fan on my 100 favorite films list,

nothing odd about it. its hugely entertaining.

 I agree 100%. Tony Scott is my favorite director (Ridley being my 2nd favorite) and Days of Thunder is indeed a great f'ing film.

reply

Why is it odd? The film was entertaining.

This movie is a blast and QT enjoys fun movies.

Tarantino is just an all round weird dude haha. Days of Thunder is a fun movie, but it should never be among a respected film maker's favorite movies. I mean, these are guys that actually study film and should have 100s of films they hold in higher regard. This movie ain't even Tony Scott's best, that would be Top Gun.

Calling it a "Sergio Leone movie with cars" makes no sense. Days of Thunder has always been the sequel to Top Gun that we never got. It's the same movie with race cars.
