I was just thinking. If they made a sequel (for example, as in straight to DVD) they'd probably ruin it by using a different actor or even a different cast. No one could be as good at plying Cole Trickle as Tom Cruise was. Also What would be his sponsor? Would he drive a Chevrolet Impala stock car?

It would be hard to update a movie like that and keep the same charcters plus Cruise is no longer with Paramount and therefore would not be in the movie.

However a Days of Thunder sequel about the son of Cole Trickle could be interesting and would not require Cruise to be a part of it.

It could be a story about Cole's son and he takes over the car after his father dies/retires and some of the movie could be a flashback on the career of Cole Trickle in which they don't have to feature Cruise and if they show a driver rather than a car they could be quick shots of Wins or championship runs and nobody would care because the scenes would be there just to influence the plot when the son tries to use some of the pointers that Cole gave him.

that's not bad, and maybe his son would either get help from Harry Hogge (just like he helped Cole) or even have him as a crew chief.

reply

Yeah thats good. Tom Cruise looks 30 years older........haha. He hasnt aged very well.

reply

Call it "Days of Thunder: Ride the Lightning"

They could easily set up a sequel with an aged and most likely retired Cruise (Cole Trickle). The plot could involve his son getting into racing (played by Sean Faris). I could see something along the lines of Faris getting into a nasty wreck similar to Cruise's and wind up in the hospital. Faris asks his dad to drive his car. Cole says he'll think about, ponders awhile then decides he will only do it if Harry is his crew chief. Harry naturally says no because Cole is older than most of the competition and Harry doesn't like to be embarrassed. Then Cole pulls out the infamous, "let me drive, I won't make a fool out of you."

Of course the plot would have more depth than that and there could be endless back stories to use for Cole Trickle. I wouldn't say a sequel is impossible or improbable. NASCAR has grown so much in the last 18 years and is nearly as big if not bigger than football. So really it's just a matter of time before we see a sequel. IMO that is.

You know, i honestly believe if done right the movie could seriously make some money. But it would absolutely have to be with at least 1-3 of the original actors like a Robert Duvall, etc. Nascar is so popular these days, Paramount would be a fool not to capatalize on it and make some money with it.

Some years ago I had a (basic) idea for a sequel as well. Cole Trickle mentiones early in the movie that his real goal was Indianapolis. So I thought why not show him a few years later having made the move to Indycar racing? Of course, these days with NASCAR being far more popular than Indycar racing and the big Stallone-Driven-desaster, the idea probably wouldn't be that good anymore.

reply

you know I really liked Driven and found it to be a great movie. But yeah a dot sequel would be awesome

reply

Nascar has races at Indy now though. So he would have gotten to Indianapolis Motor Speedway through this anyways. Plus, Indy Racing is a step down from Nascar.

reply

The first one wasn't good enough to need a sequel.

I'd just like to point out that NASCAR has recently agreed to cooperate with the filming of a new movie drama based on the Sprint Cup Series. The story features a student/rival relationship between an up and coming driver and an established legend. Beyond that, other details weren't released. Perhaps this could be a sequel to Days of Thunder?

reply

Hell, if rambo and rockey can make a comeback then why not sequel to DOT even with older looking cruise.

reply

It should be Days of Thunder II: Warren Wallace is Made of Lightning.

That kid would be pure Hollywood gold.

I had an idea a few years ago for a sequel. After Rowdy Burns found out he had to retire, Cole stuck with him driving the 51 car and had many years of success, but lately things are changing. Cole's one car operation is dwindling and Cole considers retirement. Rowdy knows Cole isn't ready for that yet and unbeknownst to Cole speaks to Tim Daylan for advice. Tim explains to Rowdy he has always had affection for Cole and added that second team many years ago to inspire Cole to do better and maybe this is the route Rowdy should consider. Rowdy then makes a move to hire a young USAC driver which causes Cole to step up his game and prove that even though over the hill, he's still got it.

I would love a sequel to Days of Thunder. But the movie you described above is the exact plot of Stallones "Driven". I want a good car movie period they just come too far and few between. Well the good ones do anyway...Fast & Furious movies come out at a decent pace. but are too cartoony.

A sequel would be cool.
