The reason this will always be a great movie is that it is one of the only movies to really capture the purest essence of competition: to compete is not to beat others; it isn't even to be "the best you can be." Competition is all about conquering yourself- self-mastery.

Well-said.......thanks to renowned screenwriter Robert Towne.

These movies are pretty campy by design, so you can't take it 100% serious. It's just good-old fashioned movie fun/entertainment. But ya, the script isn't completely devoid of intelligence.
