How did they not notice this?

In the scene where Cole and Claire go to Rowdy's house and meet Rowdy's wife, I swear his wife says, "Hi Tom". She certainly didn't call him Cole. Did anybody else notice that?

reply

I noticed it after a VH1 special pointed it out to me. But lots of movies have small mistakes where actors are mentioned by name. And I think it hardly compares to the weak editing of the race scenes.

I also noticed this I think. I didn't see it as an error on the goofs section.

In the final race when Cole drives through the smoke of the wreck on turn 3 (which is a rather big one) there is never a caution flag called. They just keep on racing, because who cares about a caution right?

Also the camera angle suggests that he would smash right into the #15 car which is on fire BTW or the #25 car which is later spun out (supposed to be Gant in #33)!!! The whole scene is a mess. As much as I love the movie. It is a continuity and factual error nightmare!! Happy viewing!

The rules were different pertaining to the caution flag. I presume that this was 1990's Nascar rules and back then all competitiors raced back to the line for a caution. There was no caution light and no 'freezing the field'
In order to hold position they raced back to the line...That meant that you had to avoid cars all stalled vehicles at your own risk. Had to get back to the line.

reply

True, but in the movie, they're not just racing back to the line.

It was probably just a stylistic choice as to not break the momentum of the scene. Getting through the wreck is one of the climactic, most dramatic points of the film......they kept the momentum going as oppose to being more "realistic" and having a caution come out and breaking the momentum.

There are definitely some continuity issues with the film, but to be fair, what movie doesn't?

The movie is definitely exaggerated, and not realistic.......it's a movie. It's a fairly campy movie to begin with (remember this is a sequel of sorts to Top Gun), and I don't think Tony Scott ever tries to hide that. Racing wheel chairs in a hospital? This movie is just about entertainment. To a point, it's almost a little tongue-in-cheek........I'm not sure if people grasp that.

To Tony Scott's credit, I think he has a great eye for action, and many of the shots in this movie are pretty awesome - particularly in the racing scenes.

Bottom line, I do think it entertains.

Since Harry Gant was a household name back then, not Brett Bodine, they continued to film the #33 Harry Gant Skoal Oldsmobile from a 1989 leftover and unfortunately after wrecking it three times they must have ran out of cars on loan from the Jackson Brothers & Gant and borrowed Brett Bodine's #26 Quaker State King Racing car to finish the shot of Cole's #51 pulling the draft on #18, forgetting that the continuity issue from #33 to #26 and sponsors as well. Apparently, it just mattered they had a green & white car going straight at full speed for 2 seconds and they figured that's close enough.

How fun. By the way, you might want to rethink yor vague subject heading and give people more info on what the thread is actually about next time.

Also, does anyone know of any other examples of slips of this nature in other movies? Its a very fun piece of trivia.

No, watch her mouth... she says "Hi Cole" but it is with a real southern accent, like "Hi Cawl". Does sound like it could be something else but the Tom you're all hearing is simply because you think that's the only other name she would say.

"I think that boy's cheese slid off his cracker" The Green Mile

reply

She actually says Cole but it is with a thick southern accent so it is often misheard.

If you smell something burning...it's probably you!!!

As a NASCAR fan, the inconsistencies of the racing scenes is the thing that jumps out at me the most.

They have the Daytona 500 to start the movie (Daytona is a 2.5 mile track with over 30 degrees of banking), then there's a shot of Rowdy Burns that is clearly from Phoenix (a 1 mile track with less than 15 degrees of banking). And when they're at Phoenix, there's clearly shots from Daytona. It's really easy to spot. So that's what I hate most about the inconsistencies of the film.

I didn't notice that, but as a kid I noticed that there is a racing scene where Rowdy is in front, but then they show a wide shot of the field and it's Dale Earnhardt's Goodwrench car. There is also a scene in the last race where you see a big wreck, and one of the cars that wrecks is the Mellow Yellow car that Cole is driving, which of course isn't him because he's not involved in that wreck.

I noticed that in an episode of Walker Texas Ranger which showed the G-man #24 going around Bristol while the race is supposedly at Texas. Some just don't get it. I think the wreck scene wasn't all from Daytona at the end either in one shot because the banking didn't look quite right in one shot at least, maybe 2.

Some Yahoo on Youtube with a wicked sense of humor & a foul mouth came up with 82 errors with this film. Enjoy if you dare. It'll either piss you off and make you laugh 82 times in 8 minutes or less.
