Good post, storiesofbeauty. Very well said. I am 26 years old now, and I have been a huge NASCAR fan for about seven years now. The first time I watched this movie, I wasn't very interested in NASCAR. I thought it was cool at the time. Now, I can't even stand to watch it, even though it comes on TBS every other night. It is just so cartoonish and rediculous. The mistakes are just too numerous to list. The "goofs" section for this movie even confirms this. I realize that NASCAR today has changed a lot since this movie was made, but NASCAR wasn't THAT different 14 years ago.

what is this "inrealistic?"

"you're so drunk, i bet you're seeing double"
"Well I've got two guns, one for each of ya."

I'm a huge NASCAR fan and I thoroughly enjoy the movie even though it is for the most part unrealistic. It's definately better than Driven or some of the made for TV movies. I wouldn't mind seeing a new NASCAR movie made, maybe being a little more realistic than Days of Thunder (I mean come on, cars at Daytona looking like they're at Bristol) but it's definately one of my favorites.

The only NASCAR race that is interesting is the one at Watkins Glen. All other races are boring high speed traffic jams driving in a circle...no offense...I'm a fan of Formula 1 because of the superior technology, high speeds and awesome tracks.

Watkin's Glen is not the only road course they race. There is a race at Infineon Raceway near San Francisco.

Well I'm a NASCAR fan and I love this movie. My bestfriend is also a NASCAR fan and he loves the movie too.

You aren't the definitive NASCAR fan. Don't pretend to represent all NASCAR fans, just because you are a NASCAR fan.

I've been a NASCAR fan since a wee little one when my dad got into the sport back in the mid to late 80's. I love this movie, and yes I know its very unrealistic. One thing that I like so much for is the nastalgic (I think thats spelled right) feel it has by being set a few years after I started to watch the sport.

I think people just usually have way to high of expectations for movies. Movies are not suppose to be realistic, unless its a documentary. Movies are suppose to entertain and be fun and exciting and I think this movie is. You can't take any action movie too seriously because film makers have to throw in a little something thats very believable, but maybe possible in order to make it more exciting. Just take movies like this with a grain of salt and have some popcorn and enjoy it. On a side note I also liked the movie "3" (Dale Earnhardt movie on ESPN) and there was some very unrealistic parts to it too, but it was a good exciting and entertaining movie.

I've only seen a few Nascar races but I'm pretty sure they weren't ramming into each other and running everybody off the track and into the wall on purpose like they do in the movie. I could be wrong though, any Nascar fans have any info on this?

reply

that rowdy dude woulda been blackflagged and put on probation a few minutes into the film if it had anything to do with real racin

Among all the unrealistic stuff, bruisin like bristol at tona and dega etc, the worst scene is when they try to make some kinda dramatic point about that guys father who died at Daytona, lmao two winston cup drivers sayin the following;
"did you know about that guy x who died at Daytona last year?"
"what happened?"
"he hit the wall"
lol

my impression is that nascar fans seem to like this movie in some kinda ironic way anyway

I say it's still one of the best racing movies ever, along with Six Pack, Stroker Ace, and 3-The Dale Earnhardt Story. Actually those might be the only actual NASCAR films.

My dad and I are life long Nascar fans and we love this movie. My dad is a racer as well and he and his race team quote this movie all the time. It really to me does mark the first mainstream move by Nascar though.
