Not as good as the first movie
Gremlins 2 has some clever satire and redeemable features: such as the brilliant creature effects and Christopher Lee and John Glover. But having revisited the movie on Netflix a few weekends ago I realized it fails because it has none of the charm, or the fusion of wicked humor, atmosphere and horror elements that made Gremlins 1984 original. In fact, Gremlins has both satire on holiday consumerism, technology phobia etc, AND a story and characters you invest in (thanks to Christopher Columbus.) The Gremlins also looked genuinely evil and impish unlike these creatures, which instead look like scaly Looney Tunes. The movie's also extremely cheesy...I'm going to assume that was the tone they were going for; because the cheesyness didn't feel self-aware enough to be funny. At least that's my impression.
I understand this movie has a cult following. So I'm curious, why do you guys love it?
