Stop blaming the parents
Clearly the Christmas Spirits were responsible for Kevin being left behind. Kevin made his wish and immediately after the Christmas Spirits went to work to fulfill his wish and guide Kevin to his destiny of foiling the Wet Bandits crime spree. No matter what the parents do they can't stop the Christmas Spirits from fulfilling destiny.
