I just finished to book. It was very close to the movie, much of the classic quotes are in there. The pregnancy topic is slightly different. And there is a confusing scene that is in the book where Charlotte hangs out with the Reverend Mother. Lou is much more defined in the movie then the book. In my opinion, if it's possible, Charlotte was even more annoying in the book then the movie. Joe is older, 39 I think so there is like 25 years or so between the two of them which puts a wicked spin on things. The ending is much better in the movie then the book. It seemed like the author had something better doing and just kind of finished it as fast as she could. Over all it's a good book, quick read. It's not the best book ever but my husband thinks it's because I hold the movie in such high regard. It's a childhood favorite so it's hard to accept differences.

This is one of my old time top 5 movies, watched it a million times, i can never get board of watching it, but i didn't realize until yesterday that it was a book

Joe was 39?! I remember in the book after the sex scene that one of the lines went something like "and then it was over and neither of them were virgins anymore, maybe I am remembering wrong (its been forever since I have read this) but its literally the only line from the book I can remember so specifically, but if I am remembering right that just adds a whole other level of weird to the whole thing on top of him being so much older then Charlotte.
