That scene where she runs away and has breakfast...

When Charlotte runs away and ends up at the house where she eats that comically huge breakfast, why did she babble on about 'being a shepherd who has lost her flock"?
And everyone there just accepted her into their house?? The whole behavior/dialogue in that scene was bizarre!

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

People were very trusting back then....My parents told me that they used to leave the front door unlocked back in the day. I was like sheeeyeah right...try that ish today...home invasion folks will kill ya!

Really wow. In that documentary bowling for columbine, they interviewed some Canadians who didn't lock their front doors because they felt safe. It's insane how times have changed. Even if I lived in a gated community I couldn't imagine leaving my door unlocked or like in the case in the movie, let a complete stanger into my house.

I agree with the previous poster in that times were different then. But also the fact that Charlotte hated her life at that moment and I think she was just pretending for a moment to be someone else. Also, if you notice, the father was checking the license plate. The parents knew something to be amiss and they called the police, which is why they let her in and kept her there until Lou came got her.
