Why Did Joe Leave?

I watched the movie but I think I missed it. I remember that he told Charlotte that he loved kids but did he tell her in any point of the movie that he was going to leave like while he was waiting with her while waiting to hear news about Kate or something.
I'm just wondering.

I feel like he may have told Charlotte he was leaving when they were sitting on the rocks overlooking the water, but that could be wrong. I don't think it's expressly stated why he left, but I assume the town gossip and scandal of the situation made him leave. We have to remember Charlotte was only 15 so it looked really bad that he was having sex with her. It also looked bad that Kate almost drowned because he and Charlotte were involved. It was a small town and we know that word basically spread quickly through the area. As a pretty quiet guy who mostly minded his own business, I think Joe would prefer to leave to keep the incident from haunting him.

Hmm, makes sense
Thank you :)

Probably to save himself from embarrassment. Besides Charlotte was still a minor and Joe was an adult. Consenting sex between the two probably wouldn't fly, even in this day and age.

I guess in addition to the intense small-town gossip he would have endured, Joe would have most likely lost his job working for the nuns after a sex scandal/neglect scandal.
