I've always wondered...

Why did "Cher" cookie-cut her daughter's sandwiches? That was such a weird thing to do.

I choo-choo.. choose you.

reply

Cher's character only knows how to make hors d'ourves (sp?), so to her, a sandwich should be in a funny shape.

reply

Yeah that's true, but the real reason she cookie cuts her sandwiches is because she's kinda jealous and annoyed with Charlotte (Winona) coz the sandwiches are for the guy that Cher also likes and Cher's annoyed with the way Winona acts (wanting to be a nun, etc). She wants to humiliate her in front of the guy.

reply

That's an interesting theory! I hadn't thought of it that way!

I figured it was just Cher's protocol to cut things up in little pieces (the hors d'ourves thing) and her slutty tendancies to wind up kissing Joe ~ sure she thought he was cute, but I think she probably would've kissed anyone at that moment.

Anyway, this movie rocks ~ could totally relate. My mom used to put boiled eggs in individual plastic thingies that were square & refridgerate for a day. That way, when she made her Devil's Eggs, they were in perfect little squares...who wants square eggs?!? Tasted damn good though.

That's exactly what I thought. =)

I disagree with you guys. I've seen this movie a million times and I've never once thought that Rachel was jealous of her daughter. I think she was just a young, immature mother who wasn't sure how to raise her kids, let alone entirely grow up herself. I always imagined that Charlotte must've been much more like Katie when she was her age - wide-eyed, more forgiving of her mother's mistakes, enjoying the moves and doing crazy things like making fudge together. But when she grew into a teenager she began to resent her mother and her life choices and resent that those life choices weren't what she wanted. Rachel isn't sure how to deal with her daughter's sudden disapproval. She's used to packing up and moving from uncomfortable situations but she can't move away from her daughter.

I think most mother/daughter relationships go through something like this as girls grow up. I know I sure had my fair share of screaming at my mom and feeling like she didn't understand me. However, Rachel isn't the normal mother. She's very childlike herself, so oftentimes instead of dealing with Charlotte like a typical mother does, she instigates to get a rise out of her.

I don't think Rachel liked Joe. If she did and was worried about Charlotte as compitetion, she never would've egged her on about dating him and liking him. The reason she cut the sandwiches was the same reason she did everything else that annoyed Charlotte...to annoy her. Also, most moms do things like that to embarass their kids.

Also, another key thing is that if Rachel was jealous of Charlotte and worried about her being competition, she wouldn't be trying to teach her to drive. Rachel clearly states in the movie several times just how important cars and driving is to her. To her it symbolizes freedom and the ability to be independent and do what you want. If Rachel was worried Charlotte was gonna steal all her men, she never would've wanted to teach her daughter to drive. That would be giving her too much power and control.

The kiss that happened later at the New Year's party, I actually think had nothing to do with Charlotte. Rachel was hurt by Lou's rejection to her and she had too much to drink. She was drunk and emotionally hurt when she kissed Joe - she didn't even know Charlotte was watching until afterwards. I believe she did it as kind of a way to get back at Lou. She may have never wanted to admit it, but Lou was the man for her.

reply

She was absolutely trying to embarrass Charlotte and make her look like a little kid in front of Joe by forcing her to bring star-shaped sandwiches. It's hardly a stretch to say so, since that's what Charlotte thinks. I think it's definitely true. She waited until the perfect moment when Charlotte's back was turned to do it, and she knew it would be too late to make new ones. Then she tried to play it off like she was being her playful, hors-d'oeuvre loving self.

Bitch.

her cookie cutting the sandwiches is my fave scene int he film

its hilarious!

what a bit ch mother!

You know, I kept reading how everyone thinks Rachel was being vindictive cutting the sandwiches...

Why is it so hard for you people to believe she was just trying to be nice and as another poster stated, that's what she 'cooked.' Besides, I always figured she thought they were for her daughter and she was only doing what she always did when she made her and Kate her little "fun finger foods."

If she did it out of spite, then why would she act so genuinely surprised at Charlotte's horrified reaction? I think it was a compulsive habit of hers, and it never occurred to her that it would, or why it would, upset Charlotte.

reply

i think that rachel loves her daughters and doesn't want to cause them "pain", but she clearly has a bag of emotional problems. i think she is aware of her mistakes in life regrets them. i think she just doesn't want tosee her daughter get hurt the way she did and is trying to slow down the "inevitable" by trying to delay her growing up. she continues to treat her more like a "child" and avoids important conversations. like how she never explained sex to her daughter. she wanted to keep her innocent. i think she cut the sandwiches also for this reason. not only for her daughter, but perhaps as a subtle reminder to the guy that she was much younger than him and that he should keep his winky in his shorts.
so basically, i think she didn't know how to "properly" guide her daughter, but i do think everything she did had the best of intentions for her.

A word about mrs flax and food . the word is hord'oevrs Fun finger food is her main source book and its all the woman cooks!

I think Rachel was just trying to help charlotte!

reply

I think that Mrs. Flax cookie-cut the sandwiches out of sheer habit. She thought it was the "normal" thing to do to a sandwich, as she had made food that way her entire life.

reply

that was a hilarious scene, but i was just thinking instead of Mrs. Flask cutting out the sandwiches with a star cookie cutter it should have been a jewish star!!...you know b/c of the way she was always reminding charlotte that they were jewish.

reply

I think Rachel saw the sandwich and just couldn't resist taking the cooki-cutter to it. It was like an uncontrolable impulse. I think she meant well and was trying to help Charlotte, but it just didn't work.

Look at the sly way Cher acts just before she does it - it's obvious she's doing it out of spite. Much like the way she humiliates Charlotte in from of the beautitian.

reply

Ms. Flax liked to annoy Charlotte on purpose: asking Joe his age, saying little comments while he was around, etc... She knows her daughter and knows she doesn't want to be like her so why not annoy her for it. Maybe not exactly on purpose, but out of habit?

reply

i agree that she did it on purpose to annoy charlotte. she knew that charlotte was uptight and would get upset, so she cut the sandwhiches into funny childish shapes. i also think she did it to embarass her too. nice mother!!

reply

I agree with two theories. She did it out of habit, but she also did to upset Charlotte. NOT because of Joe (ehh, she doesn't really care about him, she was just drunk, hurt, and bored on New Year's). Because she hates that Charlotte has so much disdain for her and her lifestyle. They're two strangers in a relationship who have resorted to pushing each others buttons as communication. She knows that Charlotte wants everything to be perfect so what better way to piss her off? I think it also bugs her that she might be able to make actual food, even something as simple as a sandwich.

Oh! This scene is hilarious. I love how Charlotte is talking in the narration, that she wants to make big sandwiches, ones for a guy like Joe to sink his teeth into, then Rachel comes along and makes them into these wee stars...something I would make for my little nephews and niece! LOL!!

Hilarious scene!
