BRILLIANT movie

I don't really understand the title, as far as I can tell it didn't have a whole lot to do with mermaids and when I started watching it I thought it was going to be about a family of mermaids trying to conceal their identity, for some reason.
But this movie was really really good, I loved it! And I have to buy the song at the end, If Yuo Wanna Be Happy, because I can not get it out of my head!

Me too! I resally enjoyed this movie! I think maybe the reason they call it Mermaids is becuase Kate is a swimmer and Mrs.Flax dresses up as a mermaid and Charlotte and Kate and Bob Hoskin's character (sorry don't remember the name) all create that room full of fishies and underwater stuff. I'm just guessing but I think that's why.

Wow an obsessed fan of Mermaids...who'd a guessed....anyway I went to the set of this movie several times filmed in Rockport, Manchester-By-The-Sea, and Malden MA...It was fun getting up close and listening to Cher Winona Ryder talk to Christiana Ricci's mom about how Christina will be Hollywoods youngest member of weight watchers(went on to be anorexic ironically enough)..Something I won't forget...Apparently she spent alotta time at the craft services table. It was the day where they filmed Cher leaving her law office job(just after she called her boss an *beep* the two girls and walk up the street talking about how Charolette needs to buy new shoes to replace her boots..another was Winona making the long walk from "school" where the announcement that JFK had been assassinated...i was just off camera where Winona turns and looks at the old guy crying against the light post....they filmed that at least 20 times because the kids playing in the leaves kept screwing up...and one time Winona almost got hit by a car....Richard Benjamin was all bruised up after falling while filming some pool scenes..I remember he looked like hell...Anyway I'm sure no one is interested in this crap but that's the story...Got several good pictures from that day if anyone is interested I can email including the first director Frank Oz.......

Makes sense to me.

I thought that too! weird isn't it

I saw this movie probably about 6 years ago when I was 12 and I had the biggest crush on Joe. Kinda icky yeah I know, but he was sooo cute.

That aside, I loved this movie. It was just great. And I thought it was funny how Charlotte 'just up and decided' to become so deeply religious.

*******************************SPOILER (even though most people that will even look on this board probably know the film by heart.. lol)

But yeah, my favorite part was where Charlotte runs away and ends up at "THE perfect family's" house and is talking about diamond dust and all that. And the fairy tale she spins for them is completely demolished when Lou shows up. It's kinda sad... lol

Does anyone know what Charlotte called Kate? I can't remember, and a friend asked. So frustrating!

I LOVE this movie too. I love Winona in it, and Christina Ricci is so adorable. She was the cutest little kid! The story i obviously really like, even though i usually don't like movies about that era. Cher was magnificent, but my true love in this movie was Winona .. and is in every movie of hers. She is truely remarkable. This movie was one of my favorite movies when i was a kid.[some spoilers, don't read it if you don't want to. click and drag over white.] I loved the part when they danced in the end. That was my favorite part when i was little. Now i love the entire movie. i don't think i could pick out a favorite part. I love how Charlotte chooses to be obsessed with the Catholic religion also. When i was little i couldn't get over how she had that little table set up with the shrines. i thought that was so cool. The scene right after Charlotte comes back home from running away, and Cher is cutting the rice crispy treats is so good. That was great acting done by Cher. And hilariously funny I thought. "Go to your room! If I talk to you right now .. I'LL KILL you!" lol All in all, an absolutely terrific movie. Five enormous stars. Cheers to you fellow lovers!

About the title-technically, one would have to read the book to figure out why they named the title that, I mean Kate swimming and the costume and everything makes sense in the movie, but probably the real reason they used the title was became that's what the book was called.

Ok, so why was the book called that?

I'm just playing devil's advocate, really, it suddenly clicked one day that the title makes perfect sense.
