How did Tommy get arrested at the end of the movie but not Rocky.

I know he won the fight but how come he didn't get arrested for it?

reply

I suppose for the 2 times Tommy jumped Rocky from behind, you could say Rocky was fighting half the time in self-defense. But yeah he was a willing participant in this illegal streetfight, and was the one who suggested it in the first place.

reply

In the director's original cut, Tommy is the one who throws the first punch. Actually, he flat out throws a vicious barrage of them... assaulting a man who has significant brain damage by doing so.

Rocky is a former HW boxing champion. So naturally, witnesses and bystanders would come forward and confirm how the fight started. It was on television, after all.

reply

I don't think you understand how much Rocky is loved in Philadelphia. He could shoot the mayor and the cops would be like "Eh, we didn't like him anyway. Just don't do it again, Rock." And I don't mean in the fictional movie world; I mean in real life.

So yeah, no way are the cops arresting Rocky.

reply

It was Tommy that threatened Rocky to begin with and it didn't help with Tommy punching normal citizens on the street.

Rocky was pro-fighting with Tommy. They wouldn't arrest him for that.

reply

Because it's a movie and the guy who wrote it so that's just a long felt that his character shouldn't be arrested LMAO

reply

What's interesting is that in the workprint video on YouTube, the police ask Tommy for an autograph instead. Absolutely nobody got arrested.

reply

Ha, for real?

Damn, that would've been a lot better and a memorable moment for the movie.

reply

That sounds like an awesome ending.

After we saw the police get their autographs, smiling and shaking hands with Tommy, it just would have needed Rodney Dangerfield to appear from among the crowd and scream "Hey Everybody - We're all gonna to get laid!" to make it complete.

reply

Are we sure he got arrested? Maybe the police were just helping him up since no else there was going to, and obviously the fans were Pro Rocky. Not wanting anyone to get further injured, or killed by a mob, they just helped him up and took him home.

reply

I wondered the same thing. It's only IMPLIED that he got arrested. There are no cuffs and no shot of Tommy getting put in the back of a squad car, so I wondered as well. I think it's ambiguous, but I do think we are to assume he went to jail. Otherwise, why cops? Why not just regular citizens on the street?

I kind of prefer to think that he did not, but Tommy's cheap shots on Paulie and that random guy in the crowd was not cool. So perhaps for that, he deserves it. But for fighting with Rock? Mutual combat.

reply

Cause he was a loser and this is America, baby.

reply

Because only the loser gets arrested. Also Tommy assaulted Paulie and he jumped Rocky several times.
