This is basically a 'Dirty Harry' movie..

..ain't it?

Has all the usual ingedients of a "Dirty Harry" film. Eastwood even smokes a cigar in it FFS.

Indeed I also tought about that.

The difference is that The Rookie, while technically proficient from an action perspective, lacks the thematic substance and irony of most of the Dirty Harry movies.

reply

The Dirty Harry movies were far superior to this, IMO.

reply

C'mon "Dirty Harry Movies" better than this.
Sudden Impact and The Dead Pool stinks, well atleast Sudden Impact.

This one stands up there with Die Hard and Leathal Weapon and Road House.
A real good late 80's early 90's wham bam thank you mam kind of action.

reply

I think this could sort of be considered a spiritual sequel to the dirty harry movies or something

reply

I personally do not like the Dirty Harry films but I loved the Rookie. As least, his second partner survives this film.

The best films are made in an intelligent format.

reply

I've always considered this as the "retirment" movie for Dirty Harry.

never undestood why Clint charecter isn't called Harry...

reply

it's entertaining!

I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, "... I drank what?"

reply

AS much as I liked the characters of Nick and David, this movie sucked when I saw it in 91 and it sucks now. Compared to Eastwood's bigger money films it's terrible, even a little worse than Dead Pool.

Yep, 'The Rookie' feels like another installment of the Dirty Harry series, a mix between 'The Dead Pool' and 'The Enforcer'. Every bit as bad as both of them, if not worse.

reply

Dirty Harry doesn't smoke cigars.

This is basicly an action cop movie, their are a billion of 'em it happens to have Clint Eastwood be the cop but it isn't a Dirty Harry movie. that's like saying The Outlaw Josey Wales is basicly a man with no name movie because they are both westerns starring Clint.

'The Expendables' Get Ready to Have A Mangasim!

When I was younger and stupider, and not that familiar with the series, I thought The Rookie and The Gauntlet were Dirty Harry films, haha.

I am not sure why he didn't adapt this script to work as a Callahan film.

I mean, the guys in High Plains Drifter and Pale Rider don't have names per se, but they ain't Man with No Name movies. Spiritual successors, perhaps.

"Spiritual successors" - nice one.
