houses in the desert

legit question, but do they not normally put concrete slab foundations under houses in the desert?

reply

I would think any structure built to last long term would require a solid concrete foundation nowadays. However, the various North American Indian nations made due without cement.

reply

Sure, but this was a more modern small town and nobody except for the prepers had any concrete. Maybe the sand is stable enough that they don't need it? I truly have no idea.

reply

Sand wouldn't have enough stability to support a proper structure over many decades so I guess it doesn't make a lot of sense. Maybe it was just a quick, slap together set design.

reply

I was more thinking it made it more plausible for the graboids to bust through the floors, since we saw one kill itself on the cement wall when it ran into it, although slabs aren't as thick as the wall.

reply

Good point, a lack of proper foundations was probably just a plot convenience.
Really fun movie in any event, loved the cast.

reply

Yup, watched it last night and it holds up phenomenally. Damn near perfect monster movie. I actually bought all 6 yesterday, but I've only seen the first 2.
