It was good until...

It was definitely not a stellar film, but it was watchable and had a decent, sort of creepy atmosphere when they got to Springwood and the town fair. Then it got to the Spencer "video game" scene where Freddy is literally playing a "Nintendo" game with the kid. That was actually the most asinine part of the entire franchise. Unbelievably bad and ridiculous. I don't see how even in the early 90s they could've thought that would be scary and/or funny. It was just insanely bad and dumb. This one still isn't as bad as number 5, but it's definitely close. The first 30 minutes are decent and have an OK atmosphere, but then it just takes a huge turn and gets campy and absurd beyond belief. Even as a fan of the franchise I don't particularly like these films after number 4, but 5 and 6 stand out to me as particularly awful.

I like all the movies, they all have good points, but particulary I think 5 gets a lot of undue bashing.

Personally, I enjoy the 'SNES' part, it was a lot of fun, as was the whole movie. I watched this at the movies in 1991 and I do remember some noise in the theater when Spencer was getting his butt kicked in dreamland SNES world. Nintendo was everything in the early 90s; so many hours spent playing NES, them SNES.

I agree, and I grew up with Nintendo too, but I just felt like this was horribly out of place in the movie and did not fit the director's otherwise serious attempts to make the film scary.
