How is this considered 'horror'?

Is it simply because Freddy Kreuger's in it? I'm not even really sure what genre it falls under, but there's nothing scary in it!

It's like I said, it might seem funny watching, it BUT if this stuff was happening to YOU it would be TERRIFYING!!

And I thought it DID have some horror elements, I mean screwing with a deaf kid's hearing, and making a girl relive her father raping her is pretty horrific.

To me when Freddy is funny like this, it makes it sicker.

Just because we lose today's battle doesn't mean we've lost tommorow's war.

It isn't happening to you though is it?

This film is laughable as a NOES film....to be honest they got worse with each release.

reply

Well.... NO, but when I watch a horror movie I kinda put myself in the victim's shoes, isn't that kinda the expereince of seeing a horror movie? But apparantly from what I read most ppl don't do that, they just wanna get grossed out by mindless blood and gore.

THIS. It's refreshing to encounter someone else who thinks this way.

It's the same situation when people ask me how the hell I found "Frozen" to be scary. Well duh! Just put yourself in their situation!

reply

Exactly... I know my response is late BUT......

When I point out the later movies are scary b/c if it were happening to you it would be horrific, most ppl always come back with, "But it isn't happening to me."

I think that's sorta a lame reply b/c couldn't you apply that to ANY horror movie, what would make any horror movie scary?

Why do ppl find Nightmare 1 scary? After all the audience is not going through all the stuff Nancy was going through, so why should they find it scary at all?

Watching it for the first time now. The dream scenes seem pretty well done (10 minutes in) for a movie released in 1991.

No scary part yet

I can never tell when I am reading someones signature.

Yeah it definitely is more of a comedy than anything.

Why is it a horror?

BECAUSE THE MAP SAYS YOU'RE *beep*

reply

Yeah and it's not like they'd put 1-5 in the horror section then part 6 in the comedy lol

The industry standard is that if a movie is a sequel to another movie, it's the same genre as the original movie. Since "Freddy's Dead" is a sequel to "A Nightmare on Elm Street", it's still a horror movie no matter how unhorrific it may be. Similarly, "Rocky IV" is still a drama because it's a sequel to the drama "Rocky", even though the fourth movie is shorn of drama and is all about the action.

The basis of murder and presence of blood/gore all in a metaphysical universe perpetrated by a supernatural villain terrorizing people might have something to do with it. Despite how silly it might be, this film is still very much a horror.
